ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 11, 2014) – An outbreak of offense from the onset kept the Chadron State College Eagles in the driver's seat for the duration of their game against the Adams State University Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles came into Alamosa and posted a 45-31 victory over ASU during homecoming week.
On their first offensive play of the game Chadron's Danny O'Boyle went the distance for a 74-yard touchdown reception. The Eagles went on to convert their two point conversion for an 8-0 lead just 11 seconds into the contest. Â
After a 3-and-out from the ASU offense, CSC struck again with an 8 play, 65 yard touchdown drive which was capped off by a John McLain five yard pass to Austen Stephens. The quick and efficient drive brought the ASU faithful to a whisper as the Eagles held a 15-0 advantage with 10:22 remaining in the first quarter.
The Grizzlies were unable to stop CSC who racked up 377 yards of total offense in the first half. Â
The only source of offense in the opening stanza for ASU came via a
Keating Krauser 35 yard field goal and a
Cameron DeChesaro six yard touchdown run. In his first start, quarterback
Tom Ross struggled and was replaced by
Auston Hillman midway through the second quarter.
However, as they've done earlier this season, the Grizzlies fought back after halftime. ASU held CSC scoreless in the third quarter while offensively, Hillman found
J.R. Watters for a 17-yard touchdown pass. After a Krauser extra point, ASU found themselves trailing 38-17.
The duo connected again on a touchdown on the next drive; this time a 7-yard pass to come within two possession of CSC. Â With ASU climbing back, the Eagles reverted back to their run game led by Michael Madkins. The senior running back carried the ball 15 times in the final quarter and eventually reached paydirt with 7:07 remaining in regulation.
The Grizzlies answered with one more touchdown as
Phil Romero was the recipient of a 40-yard pass from Hillman less than a minute later. After a failed onside kick by ASU, the Eagles kept the ball on the ground, leaving little time for ASU to continue their comeback attempt.
DeChesaro led the Grizzlies with 85 yards rushing on 13 attempts as Hillman was 9-for-16 for 105 yards through the air along with three touchdowns.
Connor Stevens and
Ryan Holland led the ASU defense with 9 tackles apiece.
The Grizzlies are next in action on Oct. 18 to face Black Hills State University from Spearfish, S.D.
