ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 16, 2014) – The Adams State University Grizzlies football team looks to capture their first conference win on the road this Saturday against the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets.
Since officially joining the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) in 2012, BHSU has lost to Adams State in each annual meeting as conference foes. Last season the two tangled for a thrilling 49-43 ASU win in Alamosa on 10/12/13. After trailing 22-18 at halftime, the Grizzlies responded with 31 points in the second half. It quickly turned into an offensive shootout as the Yellow Jackets and Grizzlies combined for 42 fourth quarter points. Furthermore, the two squads combined for 1,003 yards of total offense. Quarterback
Auston Hillman was responsible for 386 yards of total offense. The then-freshman was 23-for-31 for 310 yards passing and two touchdowns. Hillman also rushed for 76 yards and another touchdown. His ground efforts were only bested by
Justin Kauffman with 114 yards along with one touchdown. At the time, it moved ASU to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in RMAC play.
The Yellow Jackets are currently in the midst of a three game slide after last week's 34-13 loss to Western State Colorado University in Gunnison, Colo. The team's last win came at home against Fort Lewis College, 40-14, on Sept. 20. BHSU will be led by senior quarterback Ward Anderson. The Wheatland, Wyo. native has amassed 1,754 yards through the air with 11 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Anderson will have plenty of targets to throw to as four Yellow Jackets have recorded 20+ receptions. The receiving core is led by senior tight end Luke Whalen with a team-best 380 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman running back Phydell Paris will be the go-to option in the backfield as he enters Saturday's contest with 414 yards and three touchdowns.
ASU is coming off a 45-31 homecoming loss to Chadron State College on Oct. 11. After trailing by as much as 35-3 in the second quarter, the Grizzlies outscored the Eagles 21-7 after halftime. Hillman tallied 105 passing yards and three touchdowns in the game after coming off the bench due to preexisting injuries.
Cameron DeChesaro led the ground attack with 85 yards and a touchdown while wide receiver
Phil Romero had two catches for 41 yards and a touchdown.
