ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 17, 2014) -- The Adams State University Grizzlies women's soccer team won today in their home match versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) foe the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks by a score of 1-0. Today's tilt featured two teams looking for their first conference win, and with the RMAC Tournament on the horizon the stakes were placed even higher.
With the win today, Adams State improves to 2-9-2, 1-5-2 in RMAC play. As previously mentioned, today's win was the first conference victory of the season for head coach
Doris Sullivan and her club. Colorado Mesa on the other hand falls to 1-10-2, 0-7-2 in RMAC play.
The Grizzlies played a strong contest against the visiting Mavericks, edging out a gritty victory thanks to an early first half goal.
Elaine Van de Wille scored her first goal of the season at the 15:13 minute mark with the assist by
Shelby McBain.
As a unit, Adams State's offensive group had a strong performance. Adams State seemed able to control the ball into the box at will, taking nine shots in the first half. In comparison, Mesa State had five shots but all were contested by the ASU defense and keeper Molly O' Connor. O'Connor collected three saves on the day for the Grizzlies. Adams State also managed to have four corner kick opportunities compared to the Mavericks' one.
Adams State will travel to Las Vegas, N.M. on Oct.19 to face off against New Mexico Highlands University at 1:00 p.m.
