LAS VEGAS, N.M. (October 21, 2014) -- The Adams State University Women's soccer team lost yesterday in their away match against fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) member, the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls by a score of 2-1. With yesterday loss, Adams State falls to 2-10-2 on the year, 1-7-2 in RMAC play. The Cowgirls improve their record 8-3-3, 5-2-3 in RMAC.
The game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, October 18
th but do a weather delay the game was pushed back to the 21
st. Unfortunately weather once again threatened to delay the game again, however both teams battled through rainy conditions.
The Cowgirls, who are making a solid push for the RMAC Tournament, had their hands full due to the offensive threats of the Grizzlies. For the game the Grizzlies outshot the Cowgirls 15-10, including 7-6 for shots on goal. What determined this game was the solid performance of Highlands's goalkeeper Sara Beecher who recorded six save. Highlands took a 1-0 lead at the 37th minute mark with a goal from Mallory Bostic.
To start off the second half of regulation, Adams responded with a goal of their own less than a minute after halftime thanks to the foot of
Karen Toro with the assist coming from
Shelby McBain to tie the game at 1-1. For a brief moment it appeared as if the Grizzlies seized all the momentum in the game, however Highlands quickly responded to the Toro goal when NMHU's Nicole Millar assisted Alyssa Saucedo for a Cowgirl goal to take a 2-1 lead. At the 89th minute mark, Adams with one last chance to equalize, had
Alex Sanderson take a shot on goal. The goal was saved by Beecher and the game concluded in an ASU defeat.
Adams will play the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Oct. 24.
