Men's Soccer Falls In Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION¸ Colo. (October 26, 2014) — The Adams State University Grizzlies men's soccer team lost today in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) match against the No. 10O Colorado Mesa University Mavericks by a match score of 3-0. With the loss today, Adams State falls to 1-14-0, 0-13 in RMAC contests. Colorado Mesa improves to 13-2-1, 11-1-0 in RMAC play. The Grizzlies have now been on the losing end of 14 straight matches.

CMU took control of the game early in the contest with a strong defensive showing in the first half paired with strikers who were able to find the back of the net. The Mavericks outshot the Grizzlies 7-0 in the first half, the only first half of the entire season in which the Grizzlies did not record a shot. The Mavericks struck first blood in the 32nd minute when CMU striker Nestor Escobar was assisted by Roy Abergil for a goal. A quick seven minutes later warranted another goal for the Mavericks when Stevie Palma was assisted by Nestor Escobar for his third goal of the season. The aforementioned offense sent the Mavericks into the second half with a 2-0 lead over the Grizzlies.

ASU woes continued after halftime when CMU opened the start of play with another quick goal. The goal came on behalf of Trenton Atkin who was assisted by Escobar to make the lead 3-0 in favor of the Mavericks.

For the match, the Grizzlies were unable to convert a goal off three shot attempts. For the entirety of the game, CMU outshot the Grizzlies 17-3. The one silver lining for the Grizzlies is that goalkeeper Austin Baumeister had a season-high 10 saves for the game.

The Grizzlies will play host to Colorado State University-Pueblo at the ASU Soccer Field on Oct. 31st.
