ALAMOSA, Colo. (November 25, 2014) – Fans at Plachy Hall Gym were treated to an offensive showcase as the Adams State University men's basketball team took down the Northern New Mexico College Eagles, 111-68.
The Grizzlies shot an impressive 60 percent (45-74) from the field and 54 percent (13-24) from three-point range as ASU scored the fourth most points in program history. The 111 points were only bested by a 125 point performance vs. Portland Bible College (11/9/13), 119 points vs. Fort Lewis College (2/10/98), and 113 points vs. Northern New Mexico College (11/21/11).
Adding to the memorable night, the team's 45 made field goals ties for second in program history while the 13 made three-pointers ties for third all-time.
Despite winning by a 43-point margin, it was the Eagles who began the game on a 6-2 run. ASU would then score on their next four possessions to retake the lead and never looked back. Hot shooting translated into a 59-36 halftime lead as guard
Shakir Smith scored 10 points on a perfect shooting performance. In the opening stanza, Smith was a perfect 3-3 from the field, 2-2 from three-point, and 2-2 from the free throw line. Also shooting to perfection was
Rodney Nelson who went 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from three-point territory for eight points.
In the second half the lead blossomed out to 30 after a
Travante Williams three-pointer with 17:12 remaining. It soon stretched to 40 points nearly ten minutes later with a
Bryan Umoru dunk. A
Darrell Polee three-pointer then pushed ASU to triple digits with 6:42 remaining.
In total, 12 Grizzlies scored led by a game-high 20 points from Wiliams. Also finishing in double figures were
Justin Kauffman with 14, Smith with 12, Umoru with 12, Nelson with 10, and
Mike Hemsley with 10.
Adams State recorded a season-high 81 bench points as no player saw more than 21 minutes of action.
The Grizzlies now prep for their conference opener against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Dec. 5. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. from Pueblo, Colo.
