ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 1, 2015– The new calendar year begins with a pair of road games for the Adams State University men's basketball team after a 12 day break in action. The Grizzlies return to the hardwood on Jan. 2 (Fri.) against Black Hills State University and Jan 3 (Sat.) with Chadron State College. Live stats, audio, and video will be provided by the host institution for both contests.
Last Time OutA layup in the closing seconds dealt ASU an 84-82 loss at home against Colorado Mesa University on Dec. 21. The Mavericks converted the winning bucket from an out-of-bounds lob pass to Ryan Stephan with two seconds remaining. The Grizzlies held an 81-79 lead with 16 seconds left but CMU's Julian Vasquez retaliated with a three-pointer; giving the Mavericks an 82-81 edged.
Shakir Smith came back with a free throw to knot the score at 82-82 before Stephan's game-winning layup.
In total, the game had 22 lead changes and 16 occurrences of a tied score. Smith led Adams State with 29 points while shooting 10-of-20 from the field.
Juwan Buchanan added 17 points while
Mike Hemsley recorded his first double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Stephan and Vasquez combined for 63 of the team's 84 points. The defeat moved ASU to 1-4 in conference play with their lone win coming against Western State Colorado University on Dec. 20.
About The Yellow JacketsBlack Hills State snapped a four game losing skid with an 80-78 double overtime win against Regis University on Dec. 20. Through 12 games, the Yellow Jackets have played four overtime games and boast a 4-8 overall record and a 2-4 mark in conference play. Guard Myles Henry has a team-best 9.8 points per game. Henry provided the game-winning jump shot as time expired in the double overtime win against Regis. Junior wing player, Riley Ryan, contributes 8.8 points per game and a team-best 4.7 rebounds per game. The Sheridan, Wyoming native had his best game in a win over South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in the form of 22 points. The Yellow Jackets are under the direction of first year head coach Jeff Trumbauer.
About the EaglesAt 3-7 overall and 2-4 in conference, Chadron State relies on the efforts of senior forward Kendrick Holliman and senior guard Christopher Smith. The duo combines for 41 percent of the team's offensive production. The Eagles picked up both of their conference wins at home on consecutive days against Colorado Mesa and Western State. Currently the Eagles have lost their past four contests. Head coach Brent Bargen is in his ninth season at the helm of the program.
Last We MetThe Grizzlies went 2-0 against the Yellow Jackets and Eagles a season ago. ASU produced a 92-78 win over BHSU and cruised to victory after building a 13-point lead by halftime. Buchanan scored 14 points while
Justin Kauffman added 12 points off the bench.
The following day ASU tamed the Eagles for an 86-74 win that saw Buchanan lead all players with 21 points. Three other Grizzlies finished in double figures including 17 points from Kauffman. Adams State shot 61 percent (11-18) from the field in the second half.
