Late Rally Not Enough As Grizzlies Fall, 28-20

Slow start results in first conference defeat for ASU

ALAMOSA, Colo. (September 20, 2014) --  20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter were not enough for the Adams State University football team to complete a comeback against the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Saturday night.

The Grizzlies (1-2, 0-1 RMAC) dropped their conference opener, 28-20, against CMU (2-1, 1-0 RMAC) as ASU struggled to put anything together in the opening half. In fact, the Grizzlies faced a 28-0 deficit heading into the fourth before offensive production came to fruition.

Quarterback Lamar McKnight and wide receiver Phil Romero played a big role in revitalizing the offensive pulse as the two connected for a pair of touchdowns. McKnight first found Romero for a nine-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth. The duo bookended that with a 70-yard strike with 2:11 remaining in regulation.

The ensuing Mavericks drive was halted quickly by the Grizzly defense but an opportunity to tie the game came to an end with: 51 remaining as an Austin Hillman pass was intercepted by Dustin Rivas—his second of the game.

For CMU, kicker Ryan Sheehan went 2-for-4 on field goals and made good of his 44-yard attempt late in the first quarter to begin the onset of offense for the Mavericks. This was followed by a three-yard touchdown toss from Aric Kaiser to Steven Lindquist on CMU's second drive of the second quarter. The lead was extended in the third quarter with a 35-yard touchdown reception by Virnel Moon and a two-yard run from Jackson Burrell.

With their fourth quarter surge, the Grizzlies tallied 340 yards of total offense while limiting the Mavericks to 273. However CMU held the edge in time of possession at 31:31. The Grizzlies have yet to best their opponent in this statistics thru three games in 2014.

ASU now begins a two week stretch on the road beginning with a Sept. 27 meeting with Western State Colorado University from Gunnison, Colo. That game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
