GUNNISON, Colo. (September 28, 2014) -- The Adams State University Grizzlies women's soccer team lost today in their bout versus longtime rival, the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers by a score of 2-1. Adams State now falls to 1-6-1 overall on the season and 0-3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. WSCU improves their record to 5-0-3, 2-0-2 RMAC.

The Grizzlies played a stout game against the Mountaineers, playing a talented squad who had yet to acquire a loss on the season. Adams State was put into a vice early, having to recover from an early goal from Western State at the two minute mark to begin the match. The goal was scored by Western State striker Nicole Giebler who found the back of the net as she dribbled the ball past Adams State goalkeeper
Molly O'Connor. The Grizzlies responded at the 32 minute mark, when
Courtney Miknis was assisted by
Laci Jones for her second goal on the season.

The first half concluded with a 1-1 tie as Adams State and Western State both shared seven shots each in the opening stanza. Adams State had three corner kicks compared to none for Western State.

The second half was a defensive affair for both squads as they were unable to have a shot find the back of the net. Adams State, however did tally 11 shots compared to Western's four. Adams also had four corner attempts, while Western had zero.

The second half favored Adams State but the squad was unable to capitalize on the opportunities given to them. At the end of regulation, Adams State and Western State remained tied at 1-1, with overtime having to dictate the outcome of the game.

It took two overtimes to finally decide the victor, and ultimately the Mountaineers came out on top with a goal from Francesca Rand, who headed the goal off a corner kick as time expired at the 110:00 minute mark.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Grizzlies, however, they will look to bounce back on October 1
st, when they travel to Durango to take to the pitch against Fort Lewis College. Fort Lewis boasts a record of 2-3-3, 1-1-2 in RMAC play. Â
