ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 21, 2015) -- Adams State University hosted the No. 19 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks Wednesday night from Plachy Hall in the team's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) home opener. The dual ended in favor of Mesa by a 39-7 score.

At 141,
J.C. Henderson took on Dan Salazar. The two posted a low scoring first period, with both competitors striking vigorously and often. The fiery opening of the matchup gave a wild air about the first period. Salazar pinned Henderson, however, 1:16 into the period.

At 149, Nick Swanson took on ASU's
Devin Vasquez. The even clash was filled with attempts on both sides. Swanson finished with nine points which consisted mostly of back points. Vasquez held strong with his defense, gaining four escape points, however, it wasn't enough to hold off Swanson as he took the match 9-4.

Next up was the 157 match between
Jacob Deaguero and James Martinez. Deaguero nearly grabbed a quick pin in the opening seconds of the first period but Martinez was able to roll through Deaguero's advances. From this point CMU's third-ranked grappler took control and gained numerous back points on his way to a pin early in the second.

Mark Mabry, Jr. and Jessie Hoffschneider followed at 165 and put on a show for the spectators in Plachy Hall. The opening minute was an intense ground battle, with no points being gained by either side. Hoffschneider would shoot and successfully snag a well-timed ankle pick. The takedown would gain CMU 2 points, and set up Hoffschneider for the opportunity to score back points. Mabry's rigorous defense would turn Hoffschneider's near pin into a three point reversal for Mabry.

The second period began with Hoffschneider on top as Mabry earned a quick point for an escape. The neutral start to the third period was soon followed by a Hoffschneider takedown. His strong under hook toss earned him the eventual back point. With the third period coming to a close the 6-6 tie caused a stir in the gym. With Mabry on bottom, Hoffschneider tried to hold on for the win. Mabry would stand up strong and break free for the winning escape with just four seconds remaining for a 7-6 victory.

At 174, Bruno Nicoletti faced
Mario Garcia. Both wrestlers showed a high level of defensive play through the match. With small strikes occurring on both sides sporadically throughout the bout, most of the competition was taken up by stalemates, stalls, and blocked shooting attempts. The third period, however, ended in a buzz. With Garcia down one near the final horn, ne broke Nicoletti's grasp to earn himself the tying point. The last three seconds of the match gave Nicoletti the final stretch he needed to win the matchup with a riding point at 5-4.

At 197 Fransisco Retana took on the Grizzlies own
Amer Tipura. The two would put on another defensive show as the low scoring affair was even through the opening two period. As the night showed, the third period served as another nail biter. Tipura on top and down 5-2, the freshman would gain dominating body position with a highly locked-in leg. Tipura gained the riding time point but soon Retana would gather up a flashy reversal. With Tipura countering with a late escape point, Retana claimed the 7-4 win.

Austin Andrade stood across from Jordan Passehl at 285. It was a difficult outing for Andrade who was pinned :41 seconds into the first period.

Jerry Huff ended the night against Colby Christensen and remained scoreless through the first minute as Huff tested the waters. He gained a strong high leg lock off a takedown soon after. While on top, Huff was nearly pinned in a wild roll around when Christensen arched over to put Huff on the mat. Huff held strong, however, to finish with a 9-1 major decision.

Adams State forfeited to Mesa at 133 and 184 resulting in 12 points for the Mavericks.

Next for ASU is a home dual with No. 11 Western State University Colorado tomorrow night. The dual concludes a wrestling doubleheader as Alamosa High School faces Centauri High School to begin the night's events at 5:00 p.m.Â
