ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 7, 2015)—The Adams State University women's basketball team returns to action this weekend with home bouts against Western New Mexico University and New Mexico Highlands University. The Grizzlies will tip off action on Jan. 9 (Friday) with WNMU followed by a Jan. 10 (Saturday) meeting with NMHU. Both Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) showdowns are penciled in for a 5:30 p.m. start. Live stats, video, and audio will be made available for fans.
Last Time OutAdams State was defeated 70-56 in their last matchup, visiting fellow RMAC rival Chadron State College on Jan.3. With the loss the Grizzlies have fallen to 1-10 on the season and have lost three consecutive games.
Desiree Anderson had a strong showing for the Grizzlies, scoring 15 points. After tying the game up early in the second half, the Eagles soared on a 16-0 run and sealed the game. The Eagles shot from the field at a 44 percent efficiency rate in comparison to the Grizzlies 28. Anderson's efforts proved to be not enough against a struggling Chadron team.
About the MustangsLed by head coach Rusty Kennedy, Western New Mexico University stands at 5-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Mustangs are currently 2-3 on the road this year which includes a win over Sul Ross State (Texas). The Mustangs prove to be one of the many offensive juggernauts in the RMAC, scoring on average 68 points per game due in part to having success at draining shots from beyond the arc. The Mustangs are led by senior Stephanie Moore who averages 14.8 points per game.
About the CowgirlsThe Cowgirls, who currently stand at 4-8 on the season, are led by head coach Brianna Finch. This is her first season at the helm of the program. NMHU has yet to win a game on the road this season, going 0-6 in games played outside the confines of John A. Wilson Complex. The Cowgirls are 1-5 in their RMAC meetings and look to shake things up against the Grizzlies. The Cowgirls average 65 points per game, but concede on average 73 points per game.
Both games will prove to intriguing match ups.
Last We MetDuring the 2013-14 campaign, Adams State beat Western New Mexico 52-45 on 1/10/14.
Emilie Klint led the Grizzlies offensively, scoring 16 points.
The Grizzlies lost against New Mexico Highlands, 82-60.
Mariah Gonzales and Klint led the way offensively for the Grizzlies scoring 17 and 10 points, respectively. During this time period of the season last year, the Grizzlies stood at 7-7 on the season and 3-6 in RMAC play.
