MBB | Program Ends Milanovich Classic With OT Buzzer-Beater Loss

ASU now 1-4 on the season

DICKINSON, N.D. (November 28, 2015) – A last second shot in overtime by Taylor Longo of Rocky Mountain College (Mont.) made the difference in a 92-90 overtime defeat for Adams State University on Saturday afternoon at the Milanovich Classic.

With 20 seconds remaining in the extra frame, ASU's Joe Bell Austin drained a pair of free throws to knot the game at 90-90. However, after a RMC timeout, Longo found the paint and sank his jumper to hand the Grizzlies (1-4) a heartbreaking loss.

The back-and-forth battle saw 13 ties in regulation and three more during overtime. Adams State held a 46-42 halftime edge but RMC battled back to force overtime. Both programs remained within one possession of each other for most of the contest as Shakir Smith led Adams State with a career-high 39 points. The senior went 12-of-25 from the field, 5-of-12 from three, and a stellar 10-of-11 from the charity stripe.

RMC held a 79-72 lead with 2:51 left in regulation but Austin and Smith drained back-to-back three-pointers to narrow the deficit to a point at 79-78. The two foes hit clutch free throws down the stretch, ultimately ending regulation tied 81-81.

The Grizzlies opened the game shooting a healthy 61.5 percent (16-26) from the field in the opening period but dropped to 31.5 percent (12-38) in the second period. Austin chipped in 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists as Kendyl Grover and EJ Hubbard II added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

For RMC, Longo finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds as Rob Ryby also tallied a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Adams State returns to Alamosa next weekend to begin conference play against Fort Lewis College on Saturday, Dec. 5th at 7:30pm.
