LARAMIE, Wyo. (November 5, 2015) —The Adams State University women's basketball team lost this evening in their first game of the season--an exhibition contest--against the University of Wyoming Cowgirls. The Grizzlies were defeated by a score of 90-41.
Â
Behind a 14 point performance from Rachelle Tucker and 12 points from Marquelle Dent, the Cowgirls were able to utilize a solid presentation from their best players paralleled with a dominating effort on the boards to seal the victory.
Â
Unfortunately the Grizzlies struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the opening 20 minutes of play. Their first half struggles were highlighted by a six minute drought without a field goal. The drought was bookended by
DeShea Wilkes who sank a jumper at the 8:46 mark then later drained a three-point basket with 2:32 left. After that, the offense began to pick up and was only outscored in the quarter, 16-12. The late surge was helpful but still left the Cowgirls with a 39-23 halftime lead.
Â
The second half warranted similar frustrations for ASU as the Grizzlies mustered 18 combined points during the third and fourth quarter.
Â
For the game Wyoming held a significant advantage in rebounds and free throw attempts. The Cowgirls ended the night with a 56-22 rebounding edge and toed the charity stripe a total of 42 times, making 32 of their attempts. Meanwhile the Grizzlies went 10-16 from the free throw line for the game. Â
Â
The Cowgirls shot 43 percent from the field as ASU shot at a 28 percent clip.
Â
The Grizzlies were led by
Cydney McHenry with nine points by way of shooting 2-12 from the field and 5-5 from the charity stripe in 36 minutes of play.
Â
The road trip continues for the Grizzlies as they face the Air Force Falcons on Friday, Nov. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from Colorado Springs. No live coverage will be available for the exhibition contest. Fans are encouraged to follow ASU athletics on Twitter (
