LUBBOCK, Texas (February 1, 2015) -- After a surge of offense during Saturday's season opener, Adams State University and Lubbock Christian University settled for a defensive battle from Hays Field on Sunday afternoon. The Grizzlies struggled at the plate in the 3-1 defeat and move to 0-2 overall on the season. ASU and LCU will wrap up their three game series tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. MT.
Adams State was held without and hit until the fourth inning as LCU's starting pitcher, Guillaume Blanchette, kept the Grizzlies off the base paths. Second baseman
Tyler Thurston ended the drought with a single but was promptly caught stealing second base with
Marco Garmendia at the plate.
Adam State picked up their lone run in the fifth inning via a
Chris Morley single to left field to bring
Jerid Huggins in from third. The run was produced with two outs.
The run tied the game at 1-1 but the Chaps responded with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. During that inning starter
J.D. Heredia was pulled for reliever
Ben Williams as LCU sent ten batters to the plate.
From the sixth inning and on the Grizzlies went without a hit and stranded four runners--three of which occurred during the top of the ninth. In the frame, LCU walked
Zach Moldenhauer,
Jaron Dorchinez, and
Dillon Granzella to load the bases but the Grizzlies were unable to send anyone across home plate.
Morley, Thurston, and
Quinn Tiernan were responsible for the three ASU hits as Morley was the only player to collect an RBI. In 4.1 innings on the bump, Heredia picked up the loss allowing five hits and three runs. The senior also added three strikeouts and two walks.
