Last Time OutThe Grizzlies fended off a pesky Western New Mexico University squad on Feb. 7 from Silver City, New Mexico. Despite winning 80-67, ASU spent most of the first half trailing the Mustangs. That deficit lasted as late as 2:14 before halftime but from there the Grizzlies gained traction to possess the lead and secure the conference win. The night before, ASU ended their seven year drought on the road versus New Mexico Highlands University. It was the first Grizzly win from Las Vegas, New Mexico since Jan. 17, 2008. The 2-0 weekend kept ASU in 7
th place of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings by way of their 14-6, 10-6 RMAC record.
About The Mountain LionsThe fifteenth-ranked Mountain Lions of UCCS hold a 19-3 overall record and a 13-3 mark in conference play. However, the program is coming off a 67-63 road loss to CSU-Pueblo on Feb. 7. The setback moved UCCS seven spots back in this week's NABC Coaches Top 25 poll. The Mountain Lions picked up their two other losses this season against Western State Colorado University and Colorado Mesa University on consecutive nights (Jan. 9-10). With a conference-best 89.1 ppg. average, the Mountain Lions are led by RMAC scoring leader, Derrick White. The 6-foot-5 junior averages 25.8 ppg. and has eclipsed 30+ points in a game on seven occurrences. The team is under the direction of Jeff Culver who is in his third season as head coach.
About The ThunderWolvesCSU-Pueblo currently sits in fifth place of the conference standings via their 15-7, 11-5 RMAC record. The ThunderWolves are quite possibly coming off their biggest win of the season against UCCS on Feb. 7. In the 67-63 win, Bronson Moton led the way with 19 points and 15 rebounds as the CSU-Pueblo defense clamped down on UCCS to the tune of a 37 percent (20-53) shooting performance. Furthermore, the Mountain Lions' Derrick White was limited to 16 points—10 of which came from the charity stripe. The team ranks fourth amongst conference teams with 80.5 ppg. and is the RMAC's best 3-point defense (32% from beyond the arc). Four players average 10 or more ppg. led by Tyrone Marshall at 13.0 ppg.
Last We MetThe Grizzlies face the Mountain Lions and ThunderWolves on the road in early December to begin conference play. It proved to be a difficult weekend for ASU who lost both contests.
Travante Williams paced the Grizzlies against CSU-Pueblo with 24 points. Pushing the ThunderWolves to the win was their conversion on 33-of-44 free throw attempts.
Against UCCS the following night, Adams State was led by
Shakir Smith's 18 points as
Michael Middlebrooks and
Juwan Buchanan each chipped in 14. The Mountain Lions led 47-35 at the break and expanded that lead after halftime by way of their 66 percent (16-24) shooting mark in the second half. At the time, UCCS was ranked No. 8 in the country.
