ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 13, 2015) – Adams State University collected 20 steals and forced 25 turnovers against the No. 15 University of Colorado at Colorado Springs from Plachy Hall on Friday night. The superb effort translated into a convincing 88-75 win. ASU's sixth consecutive win moves the Grizzlies' record to 15-6 overall and 11-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) tilts. The Mountain Lions fall to 19-4, 13-4 RMAC in defeat.
The Grizzlies held control for most of the game and only trailed briefly in the opening minute. From there, the Grizzlies defense held the No. 15 Mountain Lions in check as
Juwan Buchanan and
Shakir Smith finished the night with six steals apiece.
Michael Middlebrooks also enforced his will in the paint with a game-high five blocks.
Offensively four ASU players tallied double digit figures led by Buchanan's 25 points. The senior shot 8-of-14 from the floor and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Smith added 21 points as
Mike Hemsley and
Mikey Hope each added 16, respectively.
As a team Adams State posted a 50 percent (30-60) shooting performance. The Mountain Lions countered with a 47 percent (26-55) shooting mark but were limited by a stout ASU defense that held the conference's leading scorer, Derrick White, to 19 points.
The Grizzlies cap off the weekend with a Saturday (Feb. 14) meeting against Colorado State University-Pueblo at 7:30 p.m. from Plachy Hall.
