GUNNISON, Colo. (February 28, 2015) – A surge of offense in the second half combined with a career-high 38 points from senior Juwan Buchanan led Adams State University to a 113-84 win over rival Western State Colorado University to end the 2014-15 regular season.
After Saturday's results, ASU remains as the seventh seed for the upcoming RMAC Tournament. They will face the second-seeded Colorado School of Mines on March 3 at 7:00 p.m. from the Lockridge Arena in Golden.
In the win over the Mountaineers, the Grizzlies recorded season-highs in field goal shooting (66%), free throw attempts (55), and free throws made (41). The program's 113 points tied for a season-high (113 points vs. Northwest Indian College, 1/27/15).
The blowout win was not evident in the opening stanza as the Mountaineers kept matters close and even possessed the lead during the final minute before the break. ASU held a slim 46-44 halftime advantage thanks to a Justin Kauffman trey on the last possession of the half.
The floodgates opened with a 15-2 ASU run when the two teams returned to the court. The Grizzlies soon held a 20+ point cushion on the Mountaineers and even dipped into a 30+ point advantage later on. Adams State shot an outstanding 74 percent (20-27) in the second stanza to cruise to victory.
The bitter rivalry was on full display as action became physical in the second half. At the final buzzer both teams had combined for 70 personal fouls and five technical fouls.
Buchanan obtained his career-high 38 points by shooting 11-of-12 from the field and 16-of-18 from the charity stripe. Mike Hemsley and Mikey Hope each added 17 points as Kauffman chipped in 12.
