BB | No. 1 Mavericks Hand Grizzlies 10-3 Defeat

ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 27, 2015) -- A steady supply of offense propelled first-ranked Colorado Mesa University to a 10-3 win over Adams State University of Friday afternoon. The Mavericks scored in all but two innings and extend their program-best winning streak to 20 games. With the loss ASU moves to 10-14 overall and 6-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action. CMU improves to 25-2, 17-0 RMAC.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, starting pitcher Jeffrey Schmitt gave up a two-out solo home run to Austin Wallingford in the second. The quick score roused the Mavericks who brought two more runs in to score an inning later thanks to a passed ball and a ground-rule double from Bligh Madris. Kevin Mitchell went on to provide the second, and final, home run of the game in the top of the fourth.

Facing a 4-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the frame, ASU connected for an RBI single to left to score Jaron Dorchinez. The Grizzlies added two more runs in the fifth with a Dillon Bollig RBI single and a Dorchinez double to leftfield to keep ASU within reach at 5-3.

That was close as ASU got as CMU produced two runs in the sixth inning, a run in the seventh, and two more in the eighth.

Schmitt (3-3) picked up the loss in 5.1 innings of work. The senior gave up seven runs on nine hits and picked up a strikeout. Dorchinez went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored as Bollig went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

The two teams meet again for a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12:00 p.m.
