ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 17, 2015) – There was little cause for celebration in the Adams State University dugout as the Grizzlies fell 13-5 to the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys in Friday's series opener.
The Cowboys jumped to a 10-0 lead as starting pitcher
Jeffrey Schmitt allowed a four-run first inning that appeared to kick start the NMHU offense. The Grizzlies now head into tomorrow's doubleheader against the Cowboys with a 14-24 overall record and a 10-15 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play.
After a four-run first frame, NMHU remained steady with two runs apiece in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. The visitors then added three runs in the seventh.
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies remained off the scoreboard until the sixth as
Dillon Bollig sent an RBI double to right center to score
Tyler Thurston.
Jaron Dorchinez brought Bollig in to score with an RBI single later in the frame. Adams State followed with a run in the seventh and two more during the eighth.
In 3.2 innings of work Schmitt (2-4) gave up six runs on nine hits.
Nico Porreco and
Jerid Huggins notched two hits apiece to pace the offense.
The two RMAC foes return to the diamond tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. for a doubleheader at the ASU Baseball Field.
