DENVER (April 25, 2015) – It was a difficult day at the park for Adams State University as Regis University picked up a Saturday doubleheader sweep. ASU fell 14-6 to begin the day and later fell, 5-4, in a close game two affair.
After splitting the four-game series, Adams State stands at 19-26 overall and 15-17 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action as the program enters the final regular season week of play.
Currently, ASU can clinch a postseason berth with two wins (with New Mexico Highlands University and Colorado School of Mines both in action on Sunday, 4/26). If both NMHU and CSM were to lose tomorrow (4/26), ASU's magic number whittles down to one win to secure a spot in the RMAC Tournament.
Game OnePitcher
Ryan Richardson's day lasted 1.2 innings after allowing eight runs on seven hits. The unfortunate start put the Grizzlies in a 10-0 hole after two innings which eventually blossomed to 12-0 after the third.
The Grizzlies managed a four-run fifth inning with all of the runs crossing home plate with two outs. For the frame, ASU produced five consecutive hits as
Dillon Bollig and
Jaron Dorchinez accounted for RBI doubles to right center.
Chris Morley added an RBI sacrifice fly in the sixth as a
Drew Wells grounder an inning later scored
Zach Moldenhauer. Although the offense came alive late, it wasn't enough to overcome the substantial deficit.
Moldenhauer tallied a 3-for-5 mark with two runs and an RBI as Wells went 2-for-5 with two RBI's. Richardson (1-3) picked up the loss in a starting role.
Game TwoLate inning magic emerged in the sixth and seventh thanks to timely RBI knocks by
Jerid Huggins and
Tyler Thurston. Huggins' RBI single in the sixth scored
Tyler Thurston to inch ASU closer at 4-3. Thurston's RBI single up the middle an inning later tied the game at 4-4. The Grizzlies were primed to take the lead during the frame but a Dorchinez fly out left the bases juiced to end the inning. Once again, all three hits and the run during the seventh came with two outs.
The Rangers avoided extra innings with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to end the game at 5-4.
Marco Garmendia paced the offense with a 2-for-3 outing along with two RBI's. Thurston's final stat line included a 3-for-4 day with one RBI and a run scored. Morley wrapped up his stellar weekend by going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Bailey Garcia (1-2) was credited the loss after entering the game in the bottom of the sixth. Garcia allowed one run on three hits during 1.2 innings of work. He also struck out two batters.
Next for Adams State is a four-game series at Colorado State University-Pueblo. First pitch of the four game series is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1
