GOLDEN, Colo. (April 3, 2015) – Junior
Zach Moldenhauer went 6-for-6 at the plate and accounted for five RBI's as Adams State University split their Friday doubleheader with the Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers took game one, 9-6, but the Grizzlies responded with a 5-3 win in game two.
The two teams return to the diamond for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Golden.
Game 1The Grizzlies climbed out of a 4-0 deficit with four runs in the top of the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded,
Jerid Huggins singled down the left field line. The hit brought in Moldenhauer and
Tyler Thurston to make the score 4-2. The hit parade continued as
Marco Garmendia and
Nico Porreco collected back-to-back RBI knocks. Garmendia's single through the left side brought in Huggins as Porreco's double was enough to send Garmendia in to tie the game at 4-4. It was an inning that produced six of the team's 14 hits.
Moldenhauer's bat kept the Grizzlies in the game going forward with an RBI single to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth and later a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh to give ASU their first lead, 6-5.
Colorado Mines abruptly ended ASU's thought of a game one road win with four runs in the eighth. The Grizzlies went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to complete the 9-6 win for the Orediggers.
Moldenhauer paced the offensive with a 4-for-4 performance including a pair of RBI's and a run. Reliever
Bailey Garcia picked up the loss with two innings of work.
Game 2Moldenhauer picked up right where he left off with a 2-for-2 performance in game two. The junior led the way with three RBI's as the Grizzlies surged late for a 5-3 win.
Moldenhauer put ASU on the board with an RBI single in the first and later a two RBI double in the fourth to give the Grizzlies a 3-2 advantage. Mines tied the affair with a run in the bottom of the frame but an unearned run in the sixth and another in the seventh for ASU proved to make the difference in the 5-3 win.
Jake Montoya crossed home plate via a passed ball in the sixth as Garmendia accounted for the final run after a throwing error by Mines in the seventh. Starting pitcher
Andrew MacMahon kept the CSM bats quiet with a complete game performance. The senior pitched seven innings; allowing three runs and striking out two.
