Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 11, 2015)— The first day of the 2015 Steel and Silver Classic hosted by the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs was kicked off today with the Adams State Grizzlies women's volleyball team squaring off against Washburn University and Missouri Western University. The Grizzlies lost both games. With today's results the Grizzlies now fall to 0-5 on the young season.
Adams State lost their first game against Washburn at
11:35 this morning, losing the match in three sets. The Grizzlies fell by a score of 26-24, 25-23, and 25-14. The Grizzlies were unable to find a defensive answer to the three headed attack of Washburn outside hitters Paige Regnier, Leanna Willer, Taylor Selk. The three players combined for 30 of the points surrendered by the Grizzly defense. The Grizzlies were able to keep the first two sets much of a back and forth scoring affair, however Washburn separated themselves in the third set by leading the Grizzlies by as many as 10 points.
Leading the Grizzlies in the first game was
Briannah Mariner with eight kills,
Mallory Grimsrud with six, and
Alex Parker with six. Grimsrud also chipped in five blocks in today's game.
Gabrielle Timmen led the team with 13 digs.
The Grizzlies lost their second game against Missouri Western University at
4:40this afternoon in three sets as well. ASU was defeated by a score of 25-21, 25-13, and 25-23. MWU hitter Jessie Thorup proved to be the vocal point of Head Coach Marian Carbin's attack. Thorup was apart of 36 total attacks and cashed in nine kills for the Griffons. The Grizzly offense proved to be just a potent offensively as hitters
Paitton Heltenberg,
Hannah Atkinson, and
Alex Parker terrorized the Griffon defense. Heltenberg was a part of 42 total attacks, Atkinson was apart of 23, and Parker 21. Heltenberg led the team with seven kills.
Adams State will next play
tomorrow on September 12
th against the likes of St. Edwards University and Texas Women's University. The first game will be against St. Edwards University at
11:30 a.m. and the matchup against Texas Women's University is slated for a
