GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (September 19, 2015) – It was not the conference opener Adams State University hoped for as the Grizzlies fell 55-16 against Colorado Mesa University from Stocker Stadium on Saturday night.
The rough night was brought on by five Adams State turnovers as CMU's conference-best defense limited the Grizzlies to 32 net rushing yards. Although the play of quarterbacks
Auston Hillman and
Johnny Feauto proved effective at times the Grizzlies went without a touchdown until the 1:25 mark in the third quarter. The 32-yard score resulted from a hook and ladder play as
Phil Romero made a quick toss after a reception to
Addie Brown. Officially the play stands as a 32-yard touchdown pass from Feauto to Brown.
Pushing ASU (0-3, 0-1 RMAC) into a hole were 38 unanswered points by the Mavericks that spanned from the opening play of the second quarter until the final minutes of the third. CMU's scoring during the 38-0 run included three passing touchdowns, a rushing touchdown, a field goal, and an 85-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Before the end of regulation Feauto reached paydirt with a two yard rush. The Grizzlies were unable to convert the two-point attempt on the play that followed.
Zach Cimaglia rounded out ASU's scoring with a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter.
For the night, Hillman went 15-of-25 for 148 yards passing with three interceptions. Feauto added a 9-of-20 performance for 126 yards along with a touchdown and an interception.
Addie Brown tallied 34 yards rushing on seven attempts as Romero snagged a game-high seven receptions for 120 yards.
Wesley Brandon collected 10 tackles (8 solo) with three tackles-for-loss on the night.
The Mavericks combined for 470 yards of total offense compared to ASU's 296.
The Grizzlies return home on Sept. 26 to face rival Western State Colorado University in the Colorado Classic. Adams State will look to regain the Colorado Classic trophy after Western State scored a last second touchdown in the 2014 meeting for a 39-37 win. ASU's loss last season snapped a 13 game winning streak against the Mountaineers.
Kickoff is slated for 6pm from Rex Stadium.
