FB | Grizzlies Fall 48-17 To Lions

Adams State returns to Alamosa on Sept. 12 for their home opener against Eastern New Mexico

COMMERCE, Texas (September 3, 2015) – With only a field goal to represent any scoring in the first quarter #22 Texas A&M University-Commerce went on to score 24 unanswered points in the second quarter en route to a 48-17 win over Adams State University on Thursday night.

The Grizzlies (0-1) amassed 256 yards of total offense in the season opener as the Lions (1-0) produced 536 total yards.

The Grizzlies were held scoreless until junior quarterback Auston Hillman connected with sophomore Chad Hovasse on a 9-yard strike 27 seconds before halftime. The score marked Hovasse's first collegiate touchdown.

The Lions wasted little time to add to their lead with a one play, 27-yard touchdown drive on the opening series of the third quarter. ASU junior Zach Cimaglia made good of a 25-yard field goal midway through the quarter as Hovasse found paydirt once again in the fourth by way of a three yard pass from freshman quarterback Johnny Feauto. Freshman Hansley Fleurejus followed with a two-point conversation off a Feauto pass to complete the night's scoring for the Grizzlies. Both scores were collegiate firsts for the pair of freshmen.

Although ASU held an advantage in time of possession the team went 2-of-14 on third downs along with three turnovers.

Hillman finished 13-of-20 for 137 yards with one touchdown and two picks as junior receiver Phil Romero had a game-high 8 catches for 54 yards. Defensively junior John Flowers and senior Ryan Holland both finished with eight tackles apiece. Redshirt sophomore Dejon Scott added a fourth quarter interceptions and also added a tackle during the contest.

The Lions were led by quarterback Harrison Stewart and running back Richard Cooper in the non-conference affair. Stewart completed 17-of-32 attempts for 254 yards and three touchdowns. Cooper rushed for 149 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. A total of 10 receivers for Commerce recorded a reception.

The Grizzlies return to Alamosa to face Eastern New Mexico University on Sept. 12 at 6pm. Live video, audio, and stats will be provided.
