ALAMOSA, Colo. (September 12, 2015) – A fast start did not hold for Adams State University during Saturday's 44-30 loss to Eastern New Mexico University from Rex Stadium.
The Grizzlies (0-2) galloped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 15-yard strike from
Auston Hillman to
James Holtrop as
Rashad Hall followed with a 44-yard dash to paydirt. The Greyhounds quickly answered with a pair of rushing touchdowns to cap off a high scoring first quarter affair.
The Grizzlies broke the 14-14 tie and reclaimed the lead with a 7 play, 67-yard drive in the second quarter with Hall once again finding the end zone. Big defensive plays upheld the lead for ASU going into halftime. Despite a Greyhound touchdown, ASU stopped the two-point conversion to cling to a 21-20 advantage.
Quincey Davison properly sent the White & Green into the break with a sack of ENMU quarterback Jeremy Buurma.
Auston Hillman (left) & Rashad Hall (right)On their opening drive of the third quarter ENMU took the ball 75 yards for a touchdown to pull ahead 27-21. The Greyhounds would ultimately hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game as ASU was unable to duplicate their hot start.
The Grizzlies were poised to retaliate with a touchdown of their own midway through the period but settled for a
Zach Cimaglia 35-yard field goal. The score brought an end to a 14 play, 61-yard drive.
From there the Greyhounds scored 17 unanswered; leaving ASU with a 44-24 deficit. The Grizzlies accounted for the final touchdown of the game in the final minute as
Johnny Feauto scampered into the end zone on a 19-yard run. Feauto's two-point conversion failed to bring the game to its final score of 44-30.
Hillman led Adams State with 363 all-purpose yards. The junior signal caller went 24-of-35 for 272 yards and two touchdowns. He added 91 yards rushing on 13 attempts. Hall added 86 yards rushing on 17 carries and a touchdown while also grabbing two receptions for 20 yards and a touchdown.
Phil Romero led all receivers with 108 yards on 7 receptions as
James Holtrop snagged a game-high 11 receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive efforts were led by
James Regan who totaled 14 tackles (11 solo). Davison finished his night with 5 tackles (3 solo) along with two sacks.
Not only did the game christen the 2015 home slate but also served as head coach
Timm Rosenbach's first home game at Rex Stadium.
Timm RosenbachThe Grizzlies are next in action against Colorado Mesa University on Sept. 19. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff from Grand Junction. The matchup serves as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) opener for both squads.
