MBB | Westminster & Colorado Mesa Preview

ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 14, 2016) – The Adams State University men close out their four-game conference road trip this weekend against Westminster College in Salt Lake City and Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. Action begins at 7:30 p.m. for both games.

Last Time Out
Adams State (6-8, 5-4 RMAC) split another weekend and mirrored last month's performances against the same teams. Adams State went into Golden and saw Colorado School of Mines put up an 85-71 win to sweep the Grizzlies for the season. Colorado Christian University's home woes continued as the Grizzlies left Lakewood with an 89-77 win.

About Westminster College (8-5, 4-5 RMAC)
Westminster currently sits in 6th place in the RMAC Rocky Division.  Largely staying in games due to their defensive play. Westminster's defense is ranked 4th in the RMAC in points, allowing 70.9 per game. They get good production from Marcus Bryce who has 13 blocks and is averaging a block a game. The Griffins' leading scorer, Casey Evans, contributes on defense as well with 17 total steals this season.

About Colorado Mesa University (9-6, 5-4 RMAC)
The Mavericks are currently a game back on division leading MSU-Denver. They also share a stake in the second place spot with three other teams-- University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Black Hills State University and South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The Mavericks are led by forward Ryan Stephan. Stephan is ranked 5th in the nation in points per game boasting 25.3 per game. Stephan also pulls down 11.1 rebounds per game which has him ranked 6th nationally. Ryan's strong year has Colorado Mesa ranked No. 18 in the nation in defensive rebounds.

The Grizzlies went into Grand Junction and had themselves a game.  Just 7 minutes into the contest the Grizzlies jumped out to a 10-point lead. After keeping their lead near double digits Adams State went into the half up 10. ASU opened the second half running and pushed their lead up to 17 points. Having never lost the lead the Grizzlies coasted in firm control to an eventual win. Juwan Buchanan and Shakir Smith both cleared 20 points. Buchanan also collected 10 rebounds to lead the team.

RMAC Offensive Player of the Week
Shakir Smith posted 54 points over the weekend. 34 of those points came when he took over the game against Colorado Christian. Saturday's action against Colorado Christian was his fourth game with 30 or more points this season. Smith also collected 7 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal over the weekend. Currently Smith is ranked second in conference scoring and steals. Smith puts up 22.3 points per game and has registered a total of 25 steals.
