KEARNEY, Neb. (January 17, 2016) -- The Adams State University Grizzlies traveled to Kearney, Nebraska this weekend to participate in the Midwest Duals hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The busy day pitted ASU against San Francisco State University, No. 12 California Baptist University, and Northern State University. The Grizzlies edged out Northern State University, 28-25, for their first team victory of the season. However, the Grizzlies did fall to San Francisco State, 27-19, and California Baptist, 34-16.
Ian Wingstrom and
Martin Ramirez were the stars for the Grizzlies as each finished competition with undefeated records of 3-0 in their respective weight class.

At 125, Wingstrom had a strong performance with convincing wins in all three matches. He had first period pins over Huy Nguyen (SFSU) and Ethen Asuncion (CBU). Both pins occurred before the two-minute mark. Wingstrom then ended his day with an 18-0 technical fall over Ben Cauffman (NSU).

Martin Ramirez finished his day undefeated in the 133 pound weight class. His day began with an 8-1 win over Fernando Giron (SFSU). Ramirez continued his winning streak with a 14-0 win over Anthony Racobaldo (CBU) and a pin over Carson Henry (NSU). The senior now holds a 15-5 overall record and a 5-0 mark in duals. With his success, his match win streak has now been extended to nine.

It was a rough day at 141 for Zach Mahaney in what marked his first action of the season. Mahaney finished the day winless, losing all three of his matches. The most notable was an 11-6 loss to Josh Weinberg (SFSU).

In the 149 pound weight class,
Devin Vasquez began his day with a 13-7 loss to Dylan Furtado (SFSU). Vasquez went to lose his next two matches by way of tech fall and pin to Bradford Gerl (CBU) and Tyler Stenberg (NSU), respectively.

Koery Windham got off to a rocky start in the 165 pound weight class. He would go on to lose his first two matches by decision to Tyson Kuahine (SFSU) and Austin Kleint (CBU). Windham finished his day strong with a pin at the 4:13 mark over Sean Havlovic (NSU).Â

Nevada Bencomo had a strong performance in the 184 pound weight class. Bencomo started his day with pins over Johnahon Costa (SFSU) and John Johnson (CBU). He would end his day with a 21-2 tech fall victory over David Murphy (NSU).
Nevada Bencomo now improves to 4-1 in duals and 10-5 overall.

At 197,
Dakota Bencomo started with an 11-3 decision over Calvin Nicholls (SFSU). Unfortunately, Bencomo would go on to lose his next two matches.

In the 285 pound weight class,
Tuli Laulu lost his first match by pin to Sam Alnassiri (SFSU). He then fell to Joseph Fagiano (CBU) by pin in the first round. Laulu finished his day with a forfeit win over Northern State.

The Grizzlies forfeited both the 157 and 174 weight class in all three duals.

Adams State is back on the mat Friday, January 22 to take on Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb.Â
