MBB | Smith’s 34 Points Leads ASU Over CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (January 9, 2016) – By shooting 56 percent (30-53) from the field, Adams State University wrapped up its weekend with an 89-77 win over Colorado Christian University.

Senior guard Shakir Smith led all players with 34 points off 10-of-15 shooting to mark his fourth game of the season recording 30 or more points.

After trading baskets early the Grizzlies (6-8, 5-4 RMAC) went on a 16-2 run that included four three-pointers split between Smith and Joe Bell Austin. Adams State continued to pour it on to the tune of 60 percent (18-30) field goal shooting in the first half.

After a Colorado Christian (7-8, 3-6 RMAC) three-pointer on their opening possession of the second period ASU once again pushed the issue with a mini 6-0 run. The run gave the Grizzlies a 51-31 lead with 17:51 remaining. The Cougars tightened the gap to within 7 points with 5:31 left but Smith and Austin combined for 10 of the team's final 14 points to secure the conference win.

23 of Smith's 34 points came before halftime by virtue of shooting 9-of-10 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point territory. The second leading scorer in the RMAC finished the night shooting 10-of-14 from the field, 3-of-5 from three, and 11-of-14 from the charity stripe. Austin's 21 points marked a season-best as Bryan Umoru added 11 points and 4 rebounds.

Wayne McCullough and Jeremiah Hanson each chipped in 15 points for CCU in a losing effort. Ty McGee notched a double-double for the Cougars with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Life on the road continues for Adams State next week as they travel to face Westminster College on Jan. 15 and Colorado Mesa University on Jan. 16. For any future updates on ASU men's basketball, stay connected with www.asugrizzlies.com
