HAYS, Kansas (January 9, 2016) -- The Adams State University Grizzlies traveled to Kansas this weekend for a dual against Fort Hays State University. It was a disappointing road trip for the Grizzlies who lost, 28-14. In defeat ASU moves to 0-2 in duals for the season.
The dual began in the 125 pound weight class where
Ian Wingstrom lost to Lawson Ludwin, 5-3.
The Grizzlies' 133 pounder,
Martin Ramirez, came away with another impressive win over Anthony Calderon, 18-8. The major decision gives Ramirez his sixth consecutive match win. The senior has also won 10 of his past 11 matches.
In the 141 pound weight class,
Joshua Salas suffered a 16-1 loss to Jacob Kay.
Devin Vasquez came up empty as he faced a second round pin to William Homalon in the 149 pound weight class.
With no one suited up, the Grizzlies were forced to forfeit a loss in the 157 pound weight class to Fort Hays.
In a nail biter at 165,
Koery Windham came away with a 5-4 win over Kregg Clarke. It marks the first victory for Windham this season.
In a competitive 174 pound match,
Mario Garcia came up short with a 4-2 loss to Dylan Wiesner.
It was a day to forget at 184 for
Nevada Bencomo who ended the day with an 18-3 tech fall loss to Jon Inman.
It was the exact opposite at 197 for
Dakota Bencomo who came away with a 10-2 win over Micquille Robinson.
Tuli Laulu continues to shine at 285 during his junior campaign as he outlasted Dakota Gulley for a 4-3 decision. Laulu, along with Ramirez, are the only two Grizzlies to begin the season 2-0 in dual competition.
The Grizzlies will be back on the mat Jan. 16 at the Kearney Duals as they face San Francisco State University, Minot State University, and California Baptist University.
