ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 8, 2016) – Adams State University fell 56-12 to Colorado State University-Pueblo on Saturday from Rex Field.
The Grizzlies (1-5, 1-5 RMAC) reached paydirt on their opening drive as
Jorge Hernandez steadily moved the offense into CSU-Pueblo (3-3, 3-2 RMAC) territory. Hernandez connected with four different receivers on the drive and found
Chad Hovasse on a 33-yard strike for a quick 6-0 lead.
Montana Gomez's PAT attempt was no good as it hit the left upright. The impressive 9 play, 75-yard drive reached completion in a mere two minutes, 22 seconds.
The ASU defense prevented CSU-Pueblo from scoring on their opening drive but would eventually score on their next drive with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Rex Dausin to Daniel Wise. Bernard McDondle added a 43-yard rushing touchdown before the end of the quarter to position ASU in a 14-6 deficit after the opening stanza.
The ThunderWolves tacked on three touchdowns in the second quarter with all three scoring plays exceeding 20 yards or more.
After ASU's quick start the Grizzlies struggled to gain traction moving forward. Adams State's second quarter drives resulted in two punts, an interception, and a turnover on downs. The struggles sent Adams State into halftime trailing 35-6.
The ThunderWolves threatened to score early in the third but a fumble recovery by
Vasa Hansell on the ASU four-yard line gave the ball right back to the Green & White. The Grizzlies were unable to score after the turnover but a 44-yard punt return later in the quarter by
Addie Brown set up a Hernandez to Hovasse 18-yard touchdown pass.
Brown's punt return placed the ASU offense in the redzone as Hernandez found Hovasse on the next play for a touchdown. Hernandez's ensuing two-point conversion pass failed; bringing the score to 35-12.
The ThunderWolves had a 22-yard pick-six, an 80-yard rushing touchdown, and a 4-yard rushing touchdown to complete the game's scoring.
Hernandez was busy during the conference tilt as he amassed a season-high 43 completions off 64 attempts for 378 yards. Hernandez linked up with eight different receivers on the day with Hovasse and
Phil Romero collecting a bulk of the workload. Hovasse hauled in 10 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns as Romero picked up a game-high 12 receptions for 105 yards.
John Reed paced the ASU defense with a game-high 10 tackles and one tackle-for-loss (4 yards). The RMAC leading tackler also chipped in two forced fumbles. In total, the Grizzlies collected a season-high four forced fumbles.
Tim Brown Jr. concluded with six tackles, two tackles-for-loss (6 yards), and a pass break-up.
Brown tallied a total of 213 all-purpose yards on two punt returns and seven kickoff returns.
The Grizzlies racked up 393 yards of total offense but the ThunderWolves countered with 645 total yards which was led by a steady ground game from McDondle and Austin Micci. McDondle rushed for 276 yards and four touchdowns off 18 carries as Micci picked up 97 yards and a touchdown off 12 carries.
The Grizzlies have a rare bye week next Saturday and return to action on Oct. 22
nd against No. 13 Colorado Mesa University. Kickoff is set for 7pm from Grand Junction.
