WITCHITA FALLS, Texas (Nov. 14, 2016) – A 50.9 percent shooting clip from the field and a 54.2 percent shooting mark from three-point range wasn't enough for Adams State University as they fell, 103-88, against No. 20 Midwestern State University on Monday night.
A string of five consecutive three-pointers in the opening minutes rocketed the Grizzlies to a 15-2 lead less than three minutes into the game. The charge was led by
Brandon Sly as the guard was responsible for three of the five trifectas.
The ASU lead soon began to shrink thanks to turnovers that inched the Mustangs back into the game. The Mustangs went on to tie the game at 15-15 just a few minutes after the large Grizzly lead. Adams State would take a 19-15 lead after an
Ethan Caton layup but the Mustangs went on an 11-0 run that gave them a sizable lead. The Grizzlies ultimately went into halftime trailing 54-42.
In the second half the Grizzlies weren't able to push past the Mustangs who grew their lead to as much as 18. Adams State made it a 7 point affair with a pair of Sly free throws but they were unable to tighten the gap any further.
Adams State committed 22 turnovers which translated into 35 points for the Mustangs. The Grizzlies were also hurt in bench scoring as Midwestern held a 52-15 edge.
Bryan Umoru led ASU with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sly added 20 points, 5 assists, and a season-high 4 three-pointers.
Jarrett Givens and
Shane Johnson added 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Sheldon Hagigal led Midwestern with 27 points and shot 7-of-10 from downtown.
The Grizzlies now turn to the Fort Lewis Classic on Nov. 18-19 in Durango where they'll face Northern New Mexico College and Embry-Riddle University (Ariz.).
