ALAMOSA, Colo. (November 22nd, 2016) – Another exceptional shooting night translated into a dominate win for Adams State University as they defeated Northern New Mexico College, 101-72, in the Grizzlies' home opener.
It marked the first game of this season that Adams State (3-3) surpassed 100 points and was the fourth consecutive game the program shot over 50 percent from the field.
The Grizzlies never trailed the Eagles in the non-conference tilt but did have to fend off Northern New Mexico early on. A Northern New Mexico layup midway through the first half made it 13-12 in favor of Adams State but moving forward the Grizzlies took control and eventually grew their lead into double digits. The Grizzlies then seized a 20-plus point lead with under five minutes before halftime and never looked back. Adams State went into the break with a sizable 57-34 advantage. For the first half, the Grizzlies shot a blistering 62.5 percent (20-32) from the field, 55.5 percent (5-9) from three, and 80 percent (12-15) from the charity stripe.
After halftime the Grizzlies maintained control to keep the Eagles in the rear view mirror. The Adams State lead grew to as much as 36 to propel head coach
Russ Caton and the Grizzlies to their third consecutive win.
In the dominant win, the Grizzlies notched 33 points off turnovers compared to just 3 for the Eagles. Adams State also held an advantage in points in the paint (46-26) and fast break points (22-4).
Shane Johnson paced the Green & White with 23 points and 4 assists.
Brandon Pasker was a rebound shy of his first double-double of the season. Pasker finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds.
Brandon Sly and
Ethan Caton each chipped in 13 points as
Jarrett Givens added 10.
In the win, the Grizzlies saw contributions from everyone as all 11 players who entered the game scored.
Ezini Ugbisien led the Eagles with a game-high 25 points. Malik Woods-Williams added 22 points in a losing effort.
The win over the Eagles closed out non-conference action for the Grizzlies for the remainder of the 2016-17 campaign. Next up for Adams State is a pair of RMAC home games against New Mexico Highlands University on Dec. 2
nd followed by a Dec. 3
rd meeting with Colorado State University-Pueblo. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:30pm from Plachy Hall.
