GOLDEN, Colo. (November 5th, 2016) – Adams State University fell 42-7 on the road to Colorado School of Mines on Saturday from Marv Kay Stadium.
The Grizzlies (1-8, 1-8 RMAC) won the possession battle (36:11) but struggled in the redzone with just one score on four trips. Meanwhile, the Orediggers (8-2, 7-2 RMAC) thrived in the redzone with six scores on as many attempts.
The conference foes were fairly even in total offense as the Grizzlies amassed 413 yards compared to 494 yards by the Orediggers.
The Orediggers jumped to a 7-0 lead with a touchdown on their opening drive with a Sam Seeton 7-yard rush. The Grizzlies were unable to match the score on their opening drive but did halt the next Colorado Mines possession as
John Reed picked up this third sack of the season on first down for a loss of 8 yards. Three plays later, the Orediggers were forced to punt the ball away. Colorado Mines eventually notched another touchdown before the opening stanza ended to take a 14-0 lead.
Evan Ford provided a spark early in the second quarter as the sophomore picked off CSM's Justin Dvorak and returned the ball 12 yards to the CSM 34-yard line. The prime field position was squandered as the Grizzlies were unable to find the end zone or maintain decent position for a field goal attempt.
After that, the Orediggers made it 21-0 as Dvorak connected with Brody Oliver who hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass.
The Grizzlies moved the ball downfield right before halftime but the drive was halted as
Jorge Hernandez threw an interception to James Bauer at the CSM 14-yard line with 26 seconds remaining. The Orediggers were able to capitalize on the mistake with a touchdown on the final play of the half as time expired. The last-second score gave Colorado Mines a 28-0 lead at the break.
The Grizzlies produced their lone touchdown of the game on their first drive of the third quarter. The 11 play, 75 yard drive was capped off by a three yard touchdown pass from Hernandez to
Addie Brown.
Montana Gomez's PAT attempt was good.
Later in the quarter a
Phil Romero 7-yard touchdown pass was called back due to a penalty which halted the Grizzlies once again in the redzone. Adams State was unable to cross the goal line after the penalty as a fourth down pass attempt to
Darvin McCauley fell to the ground.
Redzone struggles continued into the fourth as ASU's 15 play, 59 yard drive elapsing 7:16 off the clock resulted in no points. The drive featured a heavy dosage of
Addie Brown who pushed the Grizzlies into the red zone after a 13 yard rush to the CSM 16-yard line. After the Brown first down rush, the Grizzlies didn't gain another yard and failed on their fourth down conversion attempt.
Hernandez concluded the day 32-of-52 for 269 yards passing with a touchdown and interception.
Chad Hovasse had a game-high 13 receptions for 132 yards.
Addie Brown and
Corey Brown handled a bulk of the team's rushing attack.
Addie Brown gained 59 yards off 11 carries while
Corey Brown gained 49 yards off 9 carries.
John Land led the Grizzly defense with 11 tackles as
Tim Brown Jr. and
Jamal Jennings adding 7 tackles apiece.
The Grizzlies conclude their 2016 campaign next Saturday, Nov. 12
th on the road against New Mexico Highlands University. Kickoff is set for 12pm.
