ALAMOSA, Colo. (December 13, 2016) -- Plachy Hall Gym played host to a RMAC shootout on Tuesday night as Adams State University hosted No. 18 Fort Lewis College.
Behind a 57 percent (36-63) shooting night, the Skyhawks (10-1, 5-0 RMAC) got the best of the Grizzlies (5-6, 2-3 RMAC) by a final score of 95-91.
A cold start plagued Adams State which allowed the Skyhawks to jump to an early 16-6 lead. Fort Lewis would build their lead to 15 before the Adams State offense gained traction to cut the deficit down to 7 points late in the opening stanza.
Brandon Pasker and
Kevin Dorsey led the comeback charge as Pasker provided 10 first half points with Dorsey coming off the bench for 7.
With the Skyhawks owning a 42-33 halftime lead, the Grizzlies put forth a valiant second half effort to make matters interesting late. In the final 20 minutes of play, Adams State shot an impressive 61.8 percent (21-34) from the field but the Skyhawks countered with a 62.1 percent (18-29) shooting clip.
With the ASU offense in full motion the emphasis shifted to making defensive stops which ultimately proved difficult for the Grizzlies. Despite the struggles on the defensive end, Adams State cut the FLC lead to 93-91 with 49 seconds remaining. The single possession affair was made possible by a 16-7 ASU run in the final 4:56. After a
Jarrett Givens layup to make it 93-91, ASU was unable to push ahead as FLC sank a pair of free throws in the final seconds to bring the game to a 95-91 final.
In the loss, Pasker tallied a team-best 17 points along with 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.
Brandon Sly and Johnson each added 14 points as Givens and
Bryan Umoru both chipped in 13 points to give Adams State a total of five players in double figures.
Joshua Blaylock and Rasmus Bach paced Fort Lewis with 26 points apiece. The aforementioned duo came on strong after halftime with Blaylock and Bach providing 21 and 20 points, respectively, in the second half. The Skyhawks shot 50 percent (10-20) from three and 81.3 percent (13-16) from the free throw line to go along with their solid field goal shooting mark.
The Grizzlies close out the 2016 calendar year at home on Friday, Dec. 16
th at 3pm against Westminster College (Utah).
