PUEBLO, Colo. (February 13, 2016) – Seven combined RBI between
Thomaslee Mares and Jake Gonzalez propelled Adams State University to their first win of the 2016 season. With the aforementioned duo leading the way, ASU defeated Colorado State University-Pueblo, 9-5.
The Grizzly (1-4) were silent until
Zach Moldenhauer and Mares opened the scoring as each grabbed a RBI in the third. Moldenhauer's fielder's choice RBI brought
Dylan April across home plate as Mares' single to center field scored Moldenhauer from second base.
Derek Denovellis brought in a third run an inning later with a RBI single to score Devin Nelson who led off the frame with a double to center field. The Grizzlies added three more runs to the scoreboard in the fifth as Gonzales connected for a three RBI double to right field.
Moving forward it was all Mares who added a RBI single in the sixth and a two RBI single during the eighth.
Defensively, starter
Tanner Wiemers kept the CSU-Pueblo offense relatively quiet by allowing only two runs off six hits. Wiemers lasted 6.0 innings and struck out five while allowing three walks.
Nabeeh Blackburn came on in relief to pitch the seventh and eighth. Despite giving up three walks Blackburn did not allow a hit in his appearance.
Mares concluded his Saturday by hitting 3-of-4 with 4 RBI. Gonzales went 1-of-3 with three RBI as Nelson and Moldenhauer provided two hits apiece.
The Grizzlies and ThunderWolves wrap up their three-game series tomorrow at 12pm from Pueblo.
