PUEBLO, Colo. (February 14, 2016) – After a seven-run third inning Colorado State University-Pueblo put the game out of reach for Adams State University on Sunday afternoon. The big frame propelled the ThunderWolves to a 14-3 win.
CSU-Pueblo (3-3) wasted little time with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before their monster third. Meanwhile the Grizzlies (1-5) were unable to do produce any runs with leadoff hits in the first and second inning.
Now trailing 9-0 heading into the top of the fourth, Adams State went to work. With two early outs, ASU tagged four consecutive singles to produce two runs.
Evan Weidner,
Deven Nelson, and
Derek Denovellis all reached base with a single to bring Nico Porrecco up to bat with the bases juiced. Porrecco swiftly sent a double into center field to score both Nelson and Weidner.
In the fifth, a
Thomaslee Mares single scored
Chris Morley who began the frame with a double. Morley's run served as the last for ASU in the series finale as the ThunderWolves tacked on runs in the fourth, sixth, and eighth inning to keep ASU in the rearview mirror.
In the leadoff spot, Morley hit 2-of-3 with both knocks doubles to left field. Weidner went 2-of-4 with a run scored as Porreco finished 1-of-4 with two RBI.
The Grizzlies utilized five pitchers on Sunday as starter
Ty Gavin lasted 2.1 innings on the mound. Gavin's (0-1) early exit was the result of allowing six runs off five hits.
Adams State remains on the road with a trip to Odessa, Texas for a three-game series against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
