ODESSA, Texas (February 20, 2016) – Adams State University picked up two wins on Saturday in non-conference action against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. The Grizzlies secured the doubleheader sweep with a close 3-2 win in game one and a 9-5 win during game two.
Thanks to an error and wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning, the Falcons notched an early 1-0 lead in the series opener. The Grizzlies were held off the scoreboard until the top of the fifth as ASU's
Chris Morley connected for a two RBI triple to score
Dylan April and
Marco Garmendia. The Green & White did their damage after back-to-back ground outs to start the frame.
The eventual game-winning run came during the sixth via a
Deven Nelson RBI single to score
Evan Weidner. The run proved to be an important one as the Falcons retaliated with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth.
Reliever
Mason Munford came on to pitch a 1-2-3 seventh inning to secure the win and record a save in the process.
Morley led the offense with two RBI and a hit as Nelson tacked on a RBI and a hit.
Kyle Godfrey picked up the win in 4.2 innings of work on the mound. The senior allowed one run off four hits while striking out two.
In game two, the Grizzlies had to overcoming a 2-0 Falcons lead which was quickly overturned with two ASU runs in the fourth followed by a four-run fifth inning. Production continued to come in bunches as the Grizzlies chipped in a three-run eighth inning to distance themselves for UT-Permian Basin.
A total of five Grizzlies notched a multi-hit game paced by Nelson's 2-of-4 performance including two RBI and a run scored.
Tyler Thurston was also responsible for two RBI while finishing 2-of-5 from the plate with a run scored.
With the offense unable to tack on early runs, reliever
Tanner Wiemers earned the win. Wiemers entered the game to begin the fifth; replacing starter
Dylan Sherry. In his second win of the season, Wiemers pitched 5.0 innings and allowed two runs off five hits.
