ODESSA, Texas (February 21, 2016) – Adams State University squandered their chance to sweep the series on Sunday versus the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
After three runs in the top of the eighth, Adams State possessed a 10-6 lead but the Falcons put forth a six-run bottom of the eighth to take the game, 12-10.
Zach Moldenhauer and
Deven Nelson pushed the Grizzlies to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first to give ASU a quick start. With two runners on, Moldenhauer lifted a RBI single into right field to score
Tyler Thurston from second base. Nelson followed with a two RBI double as the Grizzlies looked prime to end the weekend with a sweep. Starter
Bailey Garcia added to the confidence by striking out the side in the bottom of the frame.
After two Falcon runs in the second, ASU tacked on a
Michael Downs RBI hit in the third followed by a three-run fourth inning. It was
Drew Wells and
Dillon Bollig who provided timely hits in the fourth to extend ASU's lead to 7-2. Wells' RBI single up the middle drove in Moldenhauer but a throwing error on the play also allowed Nelson to cross home plate. Bollig immediately followed with a RBI single to right field to score Wells.
The game continued to favor ASU as the Grizzlies would add three more runs in the eighth.
Dillon Granzella highlighted the run production by sending a two RBI blast over the right center fence for his first home run of the season. After a UTPB pitching change Bollig went to work once again with a single and a quick steal to advance to second. With a runner now in scoring position, Downs came through with a RBI single to score Bollig.
The bottom of the eighth became a nightmare for ASU who gave up six runs off eight hits; allowing UTPB to push ahead, 12-10. The Falcons started the frame with a double and triple off reliever
Nabeeh Blackburn who was pulled after facing eighth batters. By the time Blackburn was pulled the Falcons pushed even with ASU at 10-10. Benjamin Nutch did not fare much better in his relief appearance as the Falcons added two additional runs.
Nelson concluded the day by hitting 3-of-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Granzella and Downs also picked up two RBI apiece in a losing effort.
The Grizzlies are back in action on Tuesday in Colorado Springs against the Air Force Academy at 2pm.
