GOLDEN, Colo. (February 13, 2016) – Adams State University was on the road Friday to take on Colorado School of Mines. Unfortunately, it was a long trip back for the Grizzlies as the dual ended with a 37-13 loss to the Orediggers.
Martin Ramirez,
Ian Wingstrom, and
Dakota Bencomo stood out for the Grizzlies, all recording a match win.
The dual started off great with consecutive wins by Wingstrom (125) and Ramirez (133). Wingstrom slowly worked his way to a 5-0 win over Matthew Lavengood. As usual, Ramirez made quick work of his opponent, recording a 15-0 tech fall over Caleb Micho in the second .
After getting off to a quick start, the Grizzlies went cold with consecutive losses by Josh Salas (141) and
Devin Vasquez (149). Both wrestlers lost by pin, putting the Grizzlies behind the Orediggers on the dual scoreboard. The Grizzlies also had to forfeit the 157 and 174 weight classes.
The most competitive match of the night went to ASU's
Koery Windham in the 165 pound weight class. Tied at 1-1, the match went into overtime, where unfortunately Windham fell short giving up a takedown, losing the match 3-1.
It was a great night for 184 pound
Dakota Bencomo. Bencomo dominated his match against Ben Krantz, finishing with a 15-0 tech fall in the second period. Unfortunately the same couldn't be said for
Nevada Bencomo (197). Nevada was outmatched against Paul Wilson, losing by a score of 11-1.
The night and dual ended with a quick 39 second pin in the heavy weight class. Unfortunately for Adams State, it was
Tuli Laulu who received the loss.
The Grizzlies have a two week break before returning back to the mat for the NCAA West Regionals on Feb. 26-27 in Gunnison.
