DURANGO, Colo. (February 26, 2016) - The Adams State University women's basketball team closed out their season Friday night with a 75-62 loss to the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College.
Adams State (3-22, 2-20 RMAC) is no stranger to extemporizing when things didn't go as planned this season but Friday night they put forth a strong, earnest effort shooting 42 percent (21-50) from the field and 40 percent (4-10) from beyond the arc. Both efficiencies eclipsed Fort Lewis's marks in those categories. Â
Cydney McHenry cleared 20 points for the third time this season, leading the Grizzlies with 21 points.
Nicole Broyles had her best game offensively of the season and went 6-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity line to produce 17 points. Both McHenry and Broyles wrangled 6 rebounds each to combine for one third of all the Grizzlies rebounds.
The Grizzlies came out a little sluggish and fell into a hole in the first half. The Grizzlies, however, weren't finished and used a 22-15 third quarter to come roaring back and bring it within seven. Even into the fourth ASU kept battling coming as close as five points. With three minutes left to play Fort Lewis' Alyssa Yocky buried a three-pointer to put the Skyhawks up by 10 seemingly applying the final coffin nail.
Fort Lewis was led by Astrea Reed who went 7-of-13 from the field and put up 20 points. Alyssa Yocky had an impressive night herself contributing 12 points of her own alongside 7 rebounds and 2 steals.
The Skyhawks were bested in every main stat by ASU except two. FLC showed an opportunistic nature that piled up the steals, earning themselves 12 extra possessions. FLC also cleaned the boards with 45 rebounds to the Grizzlies' 36. Those two stats made the difference in shaping the game and determining the final score.
The Grizzlies have faced quite of bit of adversity this season with a rash of injuries. They will no doubt be looking at the glass half full, however. They have one graduating senior in
Amber Tso who was lost midway through the season to injury. Meanwhile, most starters and top contributors like
Lena Jaycox will still have eligibility for next season. There is a lot for the Adams State Grizzlies to look forward to when they get back in action next Fall.Â
