ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 5, 2016) – Match wins by
Martin Ramirez,
Dakota Bencomo, and
Nevada Bencomo were not enough for Adams State University on Friday night against the visiting University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos. The Grizzlies dropped the non-conference dual, 33-14.
Ramirez cruised to a 16-0 tech fall before the end of the first period during the 133 match. The third-ranked wrestler in the nation put an end to things at 2:26 to extend his match win streak to 14.
At 184,
Dakota Bencomo grabbed an early lead with a takedown and two-point near-fall. He added an escape point in the second period as UCO's Brock Warren tacked on a takedown and escape point in the second and third period, respectively. Warren's late efforts were not enough as Bencomo grabbed the 5-3 decision.
Nevada Bencomo made it a short match at 197 with a pin at 2:04 over Brody Largent. It marked Bencomo's third fastest pin-fall of the season.
A battled emerged at 125 between
Ian Wingstrom and Zach D'Amico. In the low scoring affair Wingstrom earned an escape point in the second period but D'Amico rallied late for a 2-1 victory.
Koery Windham was active late in his match against Daniel Carillo at 165. However, his efforts were not enough as Windham was defeated 7-4.
It was unfortunately nothing but escape points for
Tuli Laulu in the 285 division as OCU's Kyle Factor proved to be too much in a 6-3 decision.
Joshua Salas (141) and
Devin Vasquez (149) were both defeated via opening period pins.
Next for ASU is a dual against No. 17 Western State Colorado University on Saturday at 2pm from Plachy Hall.
