LUBBOCK, Texas (February 6, 2016) – A three-game series for Adams State University ended on a sour note by way of a 20-4 defeat to Lubbock Christian University.
It once again looked promising for the boys in Green & White who jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Momentum swiftly changed in the bottom of the frame as the Chaparrals (3-0) produced seven runs. Two Grizzly errors added to the dismay as starter
Ryan Ferguson was pulled after facing eight LCU batters. The Chaparrals concluded the first with a home run and a pair of doubles.
It was déjà vu in the bottom of the second as LCU notched eight runs off seven hits. Extra base hits continued to bury the Grizzlies as the Chaparrals connected for four doubles. The extended frame resulted in another pitching change for Head Coach
Jim Capra as he sent
Nabeeh Blackburn in to relieve
Daniel Brown.
The Grizzlies (0-3) mustered a two-run fourth but the production was washed away as the Chaparrals tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth. LCU added their final run in the seventh to bring the game to its final score of 20-4.
Chris Morley and
Evan Weidner paced ASU with two hits apiece in the series finale. Morley went 2-for-5 with a run scored as Weidner went 2-for-3 with a RBI. A total of seven LCU batters recorded a multi-hit day.
For the third straight game the Grizzlies scored a run via a bases loaded walk. On the flip side, the team also struck out 10 times for the second game in a row.
Ferguson (0-1) was credited with the loss in his first start of the season. The junior finished with a stat line of 0.1 innings on the mound, allowing seven runs on four hits. The Grizzlies utilized seven pitchers during the lopsided defeat.
