PUEBLO, Colo. (February 12, 2016) – Adams State University fell on the wrong end of a 3-0 shutout against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday afternoon. The Grizzlies (0-4) managed only four hits in a rare non-conference meeting with the ThunderWolves (2-2).
After back-to-back singles by
Chris Morley and
Tyler Thurston to begin the game, ASU was held hitless until a
Zach Moldenhauer single in the seventh. The hitless stretch included a pair of double play groundouts. Although the Grizzlies struck out only once during this span they were hindered by committing eight ground outs.
Although the ThunderWolves' offense didn't fare much better they were still able to produce a run in the fifth and two more an inning later.
With
Dylan Sherry in his first frame of relief work during the fifth, CSU-Pueblo pushed Beau Cebulski across home plate. Cebulski advanced to second via a sacrifice bunt and made his way home thanks to a Gilbert Sauceda RBI single up the middle.
In the two-run sixth Oliver Jackson tripled to score both Manny Menocal and Dominick Bregar.
After Moldenhauer's hit in the seventh,
Michael Downs provided a double to left center in the eighth but it served as the final hit of the day for ASU.
In his first start of the season pitcher
Kyle Godfrey lasted 4.0 innings and allowed zero runs on three hits. The righty did walk three but forced seven fly outs. Sherry (0-1) picked up the loss and allowed three runs off five hits during his outing.
The two teams are back on the diamond tomorrow at 1pm from Pueblo.
