RAPID CITY, S.D. (February 6, 2016) – Another night of hot-shooting propelled Adams State University to a weekend sweep as the Grizzlies took down South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, 77-59.
Clinging to a one-point halftime lead, the Grizzlies (11-11, 10-7 RMAC) seized control and outscored the Hardrockers (7-14, 5-12 RMAC) by 17 points in the second half. By leaving South Dakota with a 2-0 record, it marked ASU's first weekend sweep of the season.
The Grizzlies were led once again by the hot hand of
Shakir Smith with 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Smith shot 3-of-3 from downtown to conclude his weekend with a stellar 10-of-13 shooting performance from three-point territory.
EJ Hubbard II tallied a team-high 14 points and also pulled down six rebounds.
Joe Bell Austin and
DJ Morgan added 12 and 10 points, respectively, to give ASU four double digit scorers.
For the game, the Grizzlies shot 50.9 percent (27-53) from the field, 50 percent (11-22) from three, and 80 percent (12-15) from the charity stripe.
After the highly contested first half, the Hardrockers were limited to a 35 percent (10-28) shooting clip after the break. They would also be outrebounded as the Grizzlies held a 19-10 advantage on the glass after a nearly even split in the opening stanza.
Adams State also held the edge in bench points (24-10) and points off turnovers (20-4).
The Grizzlies return to Plachy Hall next weekend for their final two home games of the regular season. ASU hosts Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday and Western State Colorado University on Saturday for Senior Night. Both games are set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
