ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 6, 2016) – Adams State University suffered a 30-11 dual setback against Western State Colorado University on Saturday afternoon.
Despite falling short as a team,
Martin Ramirez continued to dominant the mat. Against Zane Rich in the 133 matchup, Ramirez obtained his second consecutive 16-0 tech fall before the end of the first period. An early take-down was followed by three near-falls and a two-point near-fall to end the match at 2:30. The Elk Grove, California native has now won his last 15 matches.
Nevada Bencomo capped off his day with a match win at 197 against Mick Dougharity. In the 7-2 decision, Bencomo jumped to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back as Dougharity managed to only gather two escape points.
In the final match of the afternoon
Tuli Laulu took down Andy Armstrong, 4-2, in the 285 weight division. Laulu took a 3-0 lead into the final period but Armstrong added a two-point reversal to tighten the gap. Laulu quickly notched an escape point to leave the mat with a victory.
The trio of
Ian Wingstrom (125),
Koery Windham (165), and
Dakota Bencomo (184) engaged in hard-fought battles but each fell short in close matchups. Wingstrom faltered 6-3 as Windham fell 9-5 in a tie breaker affair.
Dakota Bencomo was dealt a 9-6 defeat. Â Â
Joshua Salas (141) was unable to register points in a 14-0 major decision against sixth-ranked Corbin Bennetts.
Devin Vasquez (149) also had a tough time gaining traction in a 20-2 tech fall loss against Tyler Adams.
12 points were automatically awarded to Western State due to Adams State forfeits at 157 and 174.
The Grizzlies host their final home dual of the season on Wednesday, February 10
th against New Mexico Highlands University. Action begins at 6pm from Plachy Hall.
