Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

MLAX| Grizzlies top Hawks to pick up first win of the season

ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 15th, 2016)-In their home debut, the Adams State University Grizzlies' men's lacrosse team put on a show for the fans that braved the high winds, as they defeated the Rockhurst University Hawks 9-4. The win marks the first time that the Grizzlies have beat the Hawks at home since the 2014 season.

The first goal of the game came from Rockhurst as they found the back of the net at the 7:06 mark of the first quarter. However, Grizzlies' Emmitt MacFarlane, off of an assist by Nik Clinton, tied the game up at 1-1 with 3:06 remaining. This would take the game into the second quarter of play.

Just two minutes into the second quarter, Seth Stowell, off of an assist by Morgan Osbourne, gave Adams State a 2-1 with his goal. Clinton would then extend the Grizzlies' lead to 3-1 with his goal at the 8:37 mark. Drew Kerigan would add his name to the list of goal scorers, when he found the back of the Hawks' net with 4:11 remaining before halftime. Kerigan's goal was also off of an assist by Clinton.

With 1:29 remaining before the half, Rockhurst cut Adams State's lead to two, to put the score at 4-2.

Kage Janes got his first goal of the season, when he drew the first blood of the second half of play. Jane's goal came at the 12:00 minute mark of the third quarter, off of an assist by Osbourne. Just over three minutes later, Collin Cranfield scored his first goal of the season to put the Grizzlies up 6-2.

Just before the end of the third quarter, Adams State added one more on to their lead as Reece Sullivan, off of an assist by Clinton, was able to beat the Hawks' goaltender to give the Grizzlies a 7-2 lead heading into the final stanza.

Sullivan would then go on to start the fourth quarter with a goal, assisted by Alan Koenig at the 11:40 mark. The Grizzlies would go up by six over Rockhurst, before Stowell would score his second goal of the game with just 2:50 left to go.

Rockhurst attempted to comeback, as they scored the final two goals of the contest just thirty-three seconds apart to cut the Grizzlies' lead to five, but were unsuccesful as time expired.

After the win, Head Coach Jason Levesque had this to say, "Really proud of the compete and the effort our guys put out this afternoon. We played well in some areas, and in other areas we still have a great deal of work to do. It's nice to get the win obviously, but we can't be satisfied. I think we could have played better, and moving forward, we really need to be better if we want to win more games. We knew it was going to be a battle from start to finish and fortunately we made enough plays to win a crucial RMAC game."

Overall, Adams State goaltender, Connor Johnson, faced twenty-two shot on goal, and made eighteen saves on the day. Out of the Grizzlies' thirty-one total shots, eighteen were on goal. The Grizzlies also went 21-25 on clears, edging out the Hawks who went 19-24.

The Grizzlies look to carry the momentum as they will be on the road for a four game road trip starting with No. 18 St. Leo University (Fla.) on March 19th. The game time is set for a 11:00 am (mountain time) start.
