Box Score ST. LEO, Fla. (March 19th, 2016)—The Adams State University Grizzlies men's lacrosse team started their three-game road trip in the Sunshine state as they took on the No. 18 St. Leo University Lions earlier Saturday. The game was delayed due to lightening. Despite holding a 3-2 lead after the first period, the Grizzlies were unable to stop the Lions as they fell 17-7.
St. Leo drew the first blood with a quick goal just two minutes in to the game to take a 1-0 lead over Adams State. However, the Grizzlies would tie the game up when
Reece Sullivan, off of an assist by Morgan Osbourne, would put Adams State on the board at the 11:12 mark.
Just minutes later, Adams State would take a one-goal lead over the Lions as
Daniel Krieble, on a man-up opportunity, would find the back of the net. Krieble's goal was assisted by
Nik Clinton.
At the 8:30 mark of the first quarter, the Grizzlies would add one more goal to give themselves a two-goal cushion, when
Collin Cranfield would score off of an assist by Orsbourne.
However, with 1:59 left in the quarter, St. Leo would score their second goal, which would see the Grizzlies maintain a one-goal lead heading into the second quarter of play.
The second quarter saw the Lions go on a four-goal streak to take a 6-3 lead, before
Emmitt MacFarlane would cut the lead to two with his goal with 4:22 remaining before the half. MacFarlane's goal was assisted by
Tanner Beck.
Shortly after that goal, Cranfield would bring the Grizzlies within one goal of St. Leo, when he found the back of the net with 2:03 left on the clock. Heading into halftime the score would be 6-5.
Seth Stowell tied the game up at 6-6, when he found the back of the net just two minutes into the third quarter. However, the Lions would dominate the third, with a 5-0 run to take the score to 11-6 heading into the final stanza.
Just over a minute into the fourth, St. Leo added one more goal, but was counteracted by Stowell's goal, assisted by MacFarlane, off of a man-up opportunity. The Grizzlies would come within five, with the score at 12-7.
"I feel we really left everything out on the field once again from an effort standpoint. We battled hard for 60 minutes, however some crucial mistakes at crucial times really hurt us in the end. Unfortunately, we really only executed and capitalized on our opportunities for about 40 minutes or so today. Against a strong team like Saint Leo, that can really hurt a team, and
tonight it really hurt us. They're very well coached, ranked in both the media and coach's poll and are having a great season. We responded to their quick strike offense for much of the game, but the last part of the third quarter, and into the fourth, we didn't and it cost us." Head Coach
Jason Levesque had to say after the game.
"I believe our young team can learn from this experience however. The loss most definitely stings, but our group is just beginning to learn how to compete and win at a high level, and trying to do so on a more consistent basis. That's the goal, and this a step in that process. We need to regroup and move on to the next game."
Unfortunately, the Lions' offense was just too strong, as they went on their second 5-0 run of the game.
Grizzly goal tender
Connor Johnson would end the day with twelve saves. Adams State would tally thirty-one shots on net.
Adams State will take to the field again on Tuesday, March 22
nd, when they take on the Florida Southern College Mocs. Game time is set for a 2:00 pm (mountain time) start.
