Adams State Falls to Northwest Nazarene

Alamosa, Colo. – The Grizzlies faced off against RMAC opponent Northwest Nazarene on Thursday afternoon at home. This is the second time this season that the two teams have met. Despite Adams State winning the first matchup, they were unable to hold off the Nighthawks consistent offense on Thursday, and dropped the competition.

Hunter Bennett won the opening faceoff for the Grizzlies. Jamal Wilson then scooped up the ground ball and passed it to Jacob Parsons who found the back of the net, scoring only three seconds into the game. Malik Maxwell put one in unassisted a few minutes later to put the Grizzlies up 2-0. That would conclude Adams State scoring for the first period while Northwest Nazarene answered with four goals to end the quarter up 4-2.

The Nighthawks would continue their scoring run in the second quarter, putting in four more before Adams State had an answer. With only 2:30 left in the half, Devon Schmidt scored with the help of Tre Williams. Then with only seconds left before the break, Malik Maxwell capitalized on a man-up opportunity to set the count at 8-4 in favor of the Nighthawks. Northwest Nazarene increased their already solid scoring pace in the third period, scoring five unanswered goals. The Grizzlies scored once again with only 24 seconds left in the quarter with Cohen Taylor putting one in off of a feed from Malik Maxwell.

Adams State would show some fight in the fourth quarter. Devon Schmidt scored his second goal of the day, Malik Maxwell his third, and Jacob Parsons his second and third. However, they were still outpaced by the Nighthawks, who found six more goals before the game ended.

The Grizzlies were not too far behind Northwest Nazarene in shots and shots-on-goal, losing those categories 46-52 and 24-31, respectively. The Nighthawks goalkeeper made the difference for them, recording 15 saves. Adams State had some bright spots statistically. They recorded 18 turnovers to Northwest Nazarene's 20, went 27-for-34 on clears, and won 11 faceoffs. Ryan Berger played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded 12 saves.

RMAC play continues on Saturday for the Grizzlies when they face off against Westminster University at home.
