ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 4th, 2016) – Pitchers
Kyle Godfrey and
Bailey Garcia were nearly unhittable in Friday's home opener to propel Adams State University to a 2-1 victory over New Mexico Highlands University.
Together the duo allowed just one run to cross home plate while allowing only five hits during the series opener.
Godfrey (2-1) put forth his best outing of the season with 7.0 innings of work; allowing one run off five hits. The senior struck out three batters and retired the side in three innings. Garcia picked up right where Godfrey left off as he entered the game to begin the eighth inning. After a quick ground out to begin the frame, Garcia registered four consecutive strikeouts which lead to the final ground ball out in the ninth to notch his first save of the season. Garcia finished the day by facing the minimum six batters in 2.0 innings with four strikeouts.
With the pitching in place, the offense found the scoreboard in the third thanks to a
Zach Moldenhauer RBI single to left to score
Chris Morley. The game-winning run came an inning later as Morley connected for a RBI single. The play allowed a hustling Devin Nelson to score from second base and slide into home plate to avoid a NMHU tag.
Morley concluded the home opener by hitting 2-for-3 with a run and RBI knock in the fourth. Nelson added a 1-for-2 day with a RBI.
The conference series resumes tomorrow at 12pm for doubleheader action at the ASU Baseball Field.
