KANSAS, CITY, Mo. (March 6th, 2016)—The second game of the season for the Adams State University Men's Lacrosse team saw them travel to Kansas City, Mo. to take on Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) rival the Rockhurst University Hawks earlier on Sunday. The Grizzlies were unable to overcome a tough Rockhurst team, as they fell 10-6.
The first quarter saw the Hawks take an early 1-0 lead, with a goal scored at the 11:23 mark. Rockhurst would add on two more unanswered goals to take a 3-0 lead, but Adams State's
Seth Stowell would cut the lead to two with his goal coming with 4:06 left to go in the first. This was Stowell's first goal of the season.
Morgan Osbourne would then find the back of the net to cut the Hawks' lead to one, with his second goal of the season coming with just twenty-nine seconds to go. Rockhurst would then go on to score one more before the second quarter, to give them a two-goal lead at 4-2.
The second quarter saw the Hawks bring the score to 5-2, but the Grizzlies would answer right back, when
Reece Sullivan, off of an assist by
Taylor Wiggins, to once again cut Rockhurst's lead down to two.
The Hawks would then take a three-goal lead with 7:24 remaining before half-time, but Adams State kept fighting, as
Drew Kerigan, off of an assist by
Nik Clinton, scored the Grizzlies' fourth goal of the contest to cut Rockhurst's lead to 6-4 with 5:40 left in the second.
However, the Hawks would add on one more before the end the quarter to bring the score to 7-4 at the half.
Adams State's
Garrett Chitwood would draw first blood in the second half of play with his goal just two minutes into the third quarter. This would once again cut the deficit to two goals.
Rockhurst would bring the score to 8-5 late in the third, with 2:18 left before the final stanza of play.
Stowell would score his second goal of the contest , and season, when he found the back of the net at the 11:15 mark of the fourth quarter. This would cut the Hawks' lead to 8-6.
Unfortunately, the Grizzlies would be unable to contain Rockhurst, as the Hawks added two more goals to end the game.
Stowell led the team in scoring with his two goals, while
Connor Johnson facing twenty-three of the Hawks' shots on net. He would end the day with thirteen saves.
"Pleased with our effort, pleased with our compete level, however there are things we need to improve upon. We had our chances at critical points in the game this afternoon. Our execution needs to be better." Head Coach
Jason Levesque stated after the game. "Overall, while our players can hold their heads high, the result isn't what we're looking for. This one certainly stings quite a bit. I'm confident in our guys and know we'll regroup and be ready for the next one."
The Grizzlies will face off again against Rockhurst on March 15
th, when they host the Hawks at 4:00 pm at the ASU Lacrosse field for their first home game of the season.
